I am having real problems syncing between Thunderbird and MemoToo (and ultimately with BlackBerry). I think most of the issues would be solved though if I could configure a custom mapping between TB/Funambol and MemoToo, and with MemoToo and BlackBerry.

The main issue is email, phone and custom field mappings. TB Mobile number is default mapped to MemoToo Home Mobile, and TB pager number is default mapped to MemoToo Work Mobile. However, when I sync to my BlackBerry, the MemoToo Work Mobile (e.g. TB pager number) is mapped to BlackBerry Mobile and the MemoToo Home Mobile (e.g. TB Mobile number) is not mapped at all. I think this would be solved if I could set a custom-mapping so that TB Mobile maps to MemoToo Work Mobile. Is this possible?

In addition, Mozilla uses "Custom 1", "Custom 2", "Custom 3", "Custom 4" (i.e. mozillaCustom1 when you export to LDIF). It would be natural for this to map to MemoToo "User defined 1". Can I set this on my own? Subsequently, mapping these "Custom 1"/"User defined 1" to the BlackBerry "User 1" is what would make sense. Can I set those mappings myself as well?

On email addresses, it seems to me that the TB/Mozilla email maps to MemoToo Home Email, and the TB Additional Email maps to MemoToo Work email. As most of my contacts are in fact work contacts, this mapping does not make sense for me. Okay. BUT if a contact has ONLY one email address in TB, it syncs to "MemoToo Home email" and NOT "MemoToo work", As most of my contacts are professional, it would make more sense if I could custom-map the secondary email to MemoToo "other" email (and then map the MemoToo Other Email to BlackBerry
second email).

On an interesting side-note, if I clear all MemoToo data, and then instead of syncing with TB, I export my TB address books to LDIF format, and then import those files into MemoToo, and THEN syncronize with BlackBerry, SOME of the mobile information IS transferred. If a contact has only one TB mobile number (i.e. mapped to MemoToo "home"), then this is mapped over to the BlackBerry. However, if a contact has both a TB mobile number (Memotoo Home mobile) and a pager number (Memotoo Work mobile), then only the latter is transferred over and the regular TB mobile number is not available.

All this could be solved by a custom-mapping if it is available. Thanks for the help!

Hi Anton

You have right. I do nothing for that limitations of the synchronization with Thunderbird and BlackBerry...

Hi Thomas,

Aside from Blackberry, could I set up a custom mapping between Thunderbird and MemoToo? That itself would solve many problems actually.

Thanks for the info

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your response. In this case, I would highly recommend that you consider adding the relationships I mentioned above. Esp. for the email addresses, and the mobile phone. Or maybe you can have an option where you specify "do you use MemoToo more for work or personal?", and if it is more for work, the above-mentioned mappings make a lot more sense.

One thing that is strange is that in your synchronization page you have the following image:

that image shows that the email maps to "MemoToo E-mail work". This is not the case though (was that the way it was done prior?)

Anyway, the way it is configured right now, it is essentially unusable for me. The best I can do is completely erase my address book and import from LDIF file, which of course way too laborious. I'm not sure how many others using MemoToo that primarily keep business contacts are having such issues, but it could potentially open up your user base with a different mapping.

Cheers

Gerard

I have a BlackBerry that I loaded up with data from a Palm. On the Palm I used the 4 user-defined fields to store important data. That data made it into my BB when I did my initial device setup. Since BB does not support Palm Desktop, I got Lightning for Thunderbird and use Funambol to sync TB/Lightning calendar, etc. with my BB. But the 4 user-defined fields are not being sync'ed so my TB address book is missing this data.

Is there any way to get Memotoo to sync these user defined fields between TB (Custom 1-4) and BB (User 1-4)? Frist reasonably-priced service to implement this gets my busines!

Dear Gerard, Thomas,

Custom-field mapping is not possible between MemoToo and Thunderbird, nor between MemoToo and Blackberry (at least using the Funambol plugins).

I have stopped using MemoToo because of this lack of feature. It was impossible to synchronize my contacts properly, as I was not able to have the correct email addresses and phone numbers match correctly between Thunderbird, MemoToo and BlackBerry (this was especially an issue when you had primary and secondary emails, and used the pager field in Thunderbird for further numbers). Furthermore, if one uses multiple address books in Thunderbird, there was no automatic way to sync all address books.
Lastly, and not least, the Funambol Thunderbird plugin would always create duplicate entries as well as corrupt the good entries sometimes.

If at least custom field-mapping were available, it would solve the large part of the problem, but it is not possible.

I maintain over 2000 contacts for work, and while I thought MemoToo was going to be the solution, unfortunately it simply not there yet for Thunderbird-Blackberry. Perhaps for other applications-phones, but that's what I have.

Instead, I am now using Google Sync, as a workaround solution. It requires me to use Google, but the benefit is fast syncing and correct mapping of information from Thunderbird to Blackberry. The downside is that it currently only works one-way for me, from Thunderbird to Google, because I use multiple address books. And for Calendar, Lightning to/from Google to/from Blackberry works perfectly.

Gerard, do note that the Funambol Blackberry application uses A LOT of battery, and it can not be shut down. I didn't realize this until I uninstalled the program from my BB and battery life literally more than doubled.

Cheers!

Hi,

I am having the same issues. I truly think Memotoo is a fantastic tool, but the mapping is both frustrating and disappointing. I am getting the following sync results

Using: Funambol Mac OS Sync client 8.7.1
From Memotoo to Thunderbird 3.1.6
Phone home: "Home" (OK)
Mobile Phone home -> "Mobile" (OK)
Fax home -> Fax (OK)
Phone work -> NOT SYNCED AT ALL!!
Mobile Phone work: -> SYNCED TO "PAGER"!!!
Fax work -> NOT SYNCED AT ALL!!
Phone other -> SYNCED TO "WORK"!!!!!
Mobile phone other: NOT SYNCED AT ALL
Fax other: NOT SYNCED AT ALL
E-Mail home: Additional E-Mail (OK)
E-Mail work: Email (OK, but not consistent with phone snchronisation)
E-Mail other: NOT SYNCED AT ALL

I understand since TB does not offer enough fields, Memotoo only can address the ones available. However, currently it is not consistent ("Phone work" is not synced at all, while "Phone other" is synced to "work", and "E-Mail work" is synced to E-Mail)

When syncing to a Blackberry bold (using Funambol BlackBerry Sync 8.7.3), the following is mapped:
Phone home: "Home" (OK)
Mobile Phone home -> NOT SYNCED AT ALL!!
[Fax home -> NOT SYNCED AT ALL!!
Phone work -> Work (OK)
Mobile Phone work: -> Mobile (OK)
Fax work -> Work fax (OK)
Phone other -> Other (OK)
Mobile phone other: NOT SYNCED AT ALL
Fax other: NOT SYNCED AT ALL
E-Mail home: Email (OK)
E-Mail work: Email (OK)
E-Mail other: Email (OK)

Honestly, this looks very much like a "random" system, it's not even consistent, like "only work information is synced", or "only private information is synced". Since Memotoo of course has no influence on the fields being offered and used by Third Party programs (like Thunderbird, Blackberry), then I can only see one solution (as others mentioned already before me):

Memotoo should offer the option to choose the fields that should be mapped! Currently, the mapping is hard coded, the "only thing" that needs to be done is to use parameters for the mapping table, and offer the user to choose the mapping fields.

I am absolutely convinced that this would clearly increase customer appreciation of Memotoo (which I think is one of the most promising products around anyway!)

Thanks for what you have done so far. But don't get stuck halfway, Memotoo!!!
