Maybe it's not built for 4000+ events. Thunderbird Addressbook cannot sync photos and has lots of trouble with multiple email addresses. (Due to freezing, I haven't been able to see what it did to multi-line addresses, Japanese names, custom address fields such as parents, work versus private email addresses, and other features that accumulate if you actually use PIM.)
